Exploring Urban Air Pollution Through Citizen Science at D.U.Th.

On Friday, December 13, 2024, the Department of Forestry and Natural Environment at Democritus University of Thrace (D.U.Th.) hosted an open session titled “Urban Air Pollution and Citizen Science: The Case of MI-TRAP”. This event was part of the Urban Ecology course led by Dr. Giorgos Chatzinakos and highlighted the innovative contributions of the MI-TRAP project in addressing urban air pollution.

The session emphasized the importance of Citizen Science in engaging local communities to co-create policies and actions for improving air quality. Speakers and contributors shared their expertise, fostering a dynamic dialogue on sustainable urban development.

The session featured insightful presentations from Professor Giannis Adamos (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, AUTH), who emphasized the link between air quality, urban ecology, and public health in the context of the EU’s Zero Pollution Plan, and Dr. Giorgos Chatzinakos and Dr. Manos Manousakas, who provided an overview of MI-TRAP’s goals and technological advancements. Georgia Tseva highlighted the transformative role of Citizen Science through successful European case studies, while Argyrios Balatsoukas and Ioanna Tiligada facilitated an engaging discussion with students, exploring practical strategies to combat air pollution and promote sustainable urban development.

A warm thank you to the students for their enthusiastic participation and to D.U.Th. for their exceptional hospitality.
