Co-Design Workshop on Sustainable Educational Spaces Using Nature-Based Solutions

As part of its commitment to advancing citizen-centred environmental governance, MI-TRAP is supporting the organisation of a Co-Design Workshop on Sustainable Educational Spaces with Nature-Based Solutions, taking place on Thursday, 4 December 2025, in Athens.

The workshop is jointly organised in the framework of the MI-TRAP and ASCEND European projects, with the collaboration of the Municipality of Athens, NCSR Demokritos, Politecnico di Milano and the 21st Primary School of Athens (Lelas Karayianni).
The event engages teachers, students, and parents in a participatory process to imagine and design greener, climate-resilient school spaces through the application of Nature-Based Solutions.

This initiative reflects MI-TRAP’s focus on empowering local communities and supporting cities in integrating climate adaptation, environmental monitoring, and participatory co-design into everyday urban life.

The workshop is organised with the support and collaboration of:

  • Dr. Nikos Chrysogelos, Deputy Mayor of the Municipality of Athens for Climate Governance and Social Economy
  • Dr. Konstantinos Eleftheriadis, Director of NCSR Demokritos and Coordinator of the MI-TRAP project
  • Ms. Ioanna Chalkia, Principal of the 21st Primary School of Athens
  • Prodromos Fetfatzis, Researcher at NCSR Demokritos
  • Dr. Klio Monokrousou, National Technical University of Athens

The workshop will be coordinated by Julia Nerantzia Tzortzi (Georgi), Associate Professor at the School of Architecture, Politecnico di Milano.

Additional contributors from Politecnico di Milano include:

  • Stevy Kopeliaa, PhD Candidate
  • Dr. Maria Stella Lux, Researcher
  • Evangelia Preka, Agronomist and Postgraduate Student in Landscape Architecture

The event will also welcome contributions from NET ZERO CITIES and the Theseus Hub4Circularity initiative, strengthening the alignment between MI-TRAP and other European programmes advancing Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) in the Municipality of Athens.

Through this co-design process, MI-TRAP continues to foster collaboration between academic partners, municipalities, schools, and local communities—promoting sustainable, inclusive, and nature-inspired urban transformation.
